  • Pope C32-30 Spindle Repair

Recently our Manchester, NH spindle repair facility received another pope spindle repair job for rebuild. A motorized 3,600 RPM grease lubricated grinding spindle.

As with all spindles coming in, it underwent an extensive inspection process to correctly identify the spindle failure. Our top-notch technician Mike L. noted severe contamination throughout this pope spindle repair job. The rotor, the housing, & the shaft were severely contaminated. The front bearings were also badly contaminated this had all caused the spindle to seize.

Once the scope of the rework needed was established, this pope spindle repair involved complete rebuilding. He also prepared a preventive action report for the customer to avoid such contamination in the future.

New bearings were precisely installed. All parts were carefully cleaned and polished then assembled, balanced and test run for full functionality to popes spindle repair specifications. The spindle then underwent a vibration analysis and inspection by an independent GTI quality check manager. It was then sent back to the customer who said “it looks better than new” this made Mike smile.

  • An EX-CELL-O EX 1714 SPINDLE REPAIR

An EX-CELL-O EX 1714 spindle repair job arrived last week at our NH facility. John J. Our skilled technician thoroughly evaluated this 3,900 RPM grease lubricated EX-CELL-O spindle for repair.

He entered all the pertinent information into our database for tracking and documentation throughout the repair process.

Thorough bench testing of this EX-CELL-O spindle repair was performed. This included extensive vibration diagnostic and spindle temperature analysis. Runout readings were taken on all exterior surfaces with precision test equipment.

After a complete spindle analysis, the customer was notified about the recommendations for this EX-CELL-O spindle repair. Upon approval to move ahead with the work needed, the process continued & optimal tolerances were achieved.

The spindle was then reassembled in a temperature-controlled clean room. Final balancing, performance testing and inspection concluded the process. All documentation was included in the customer database files. The spindle was then shipped back to the customer and installed back into the maching center ready for production.

  • WEISS Spindle Repair

This week a large automotive customer of ours shipped us a WEISS spindle repair job. Model 175301B a motorized grease lubricated 16,000 RPM spindle. It is used in the process of manufacturing drivelines.

Brian L. one of our technically trained team members here at GTI spindle technology was assigned this WEISS spindle repair. He began with the tear down process, inspecting each component as he broke the spindle down to investigate the cause of the failure and seek solutions.

He noticed fretting on the front bearing assembly and a slight run out caused by a faulty coolant O-ring, causing a slight leak and contamination. He detailed everything for the customer and wrote up a quote for the work to be done.

After approval, the repair process began. The necessary components were all re-qualified to WEISS spindle repair specs. All components were balanced, cleaned and tested. New precision bearings and seals were installed. A test run at maximum RPM was performed as well as a leak test and vibration analysis. The spindle was then subjected to our independent quality assurance check and upon approval was shipped back to our eager customer.

  • Okuma Spindle Exchange Program

I wanted to tell you a quick story about a call I received today from a company out of the Mid-West. They are die casting shop and run Okuma Spindles. Like most of our clients, they called the OEM to see what the cost might be to repair the spindle. The Okuma representative told them about the Okuma Spindle Exchange program and the cost. The cost they were quoted was $35,000!

They were surprised at this prohibitive cost and decided to look online for another option. We are fortunate to have very high online visibility, and this company gave us at GTI Spindle a call this AM. We quoted the cost at $8,500. Yes, you read that right…$35,000 or $8,500…guess where he is sending his spindle? So..before you send your Okuma Spindle to the OEM, I would recommend giving us a chance to give you a quote.
